Oregano, known as Origanum vulgare, is a popular culinary herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is widely cultivated for its aromatic leaves, which are used fresh or dried to flavor various dishes, particularly in Italian and Mediterranean cuisines. Oregano has a robust flavor with hints of earthiness, bitterness, and a slightly peppery taste. It pairs well with tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and other herbs like basil and thyme. In addition to its culinary uses, oregano also has medicinal properties and is believed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects.

  • Oregano is relatively easy to grow and requires well-draining soil and full sun exposure. It can tolerate a variety of soil types but prefers a slightly alkaline pH. Water the plant regularly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Prune oregano regularly to encourage bushier growth and harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season. You can eat what you prune off.
