  • Each melon variety requires similar care, including regular watering, well-draining soil, and full sun exposure.

Location: Plant melons in a location with full sun exposure for at least 6-8 hours per day.

Soil: Melons prefer well-draining, loamy soil rich in organic matter. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogged conditions.

Planting: Plant melon seeds or transplants after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up to at least 60°F (15°C). Space plants according to their mature size, typically 18-36 inches apart in rows spaced 5-6 feet apart.

Watering: Water melon plants deeply and consistently, especially during dry spells. Provide about 1-2 inches of water per week, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plants to prevent foliage diseases.

Mulching: Mulch around melon plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the fruit clean. Use organic mulches such as straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings.

Fertilizing: Fertilize melon plants with a balanced fertilizer or a fertilizer formulated for fruiting vegetables. Apply fertilizer according to package instructions, typically at planting time and again when the vines start to spread and produce fruit.

Support: Provide support for melon vines, especially for larger varieties, to keep the fruit off the ground and reduce the risk of rotting or pest damage. Use trellises, cages, or slings to support heavy fruit.
