Marigolds (Tagetes spp.)

Marigolds thrive in full sun. They require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce abundant blooms.

These flowers are not picky about soil type but prefer well-draining soil. They can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soil, but they perform best in moderately fertile soil.

Water marigolds at the base to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal diseases. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, as marigolds are somewhat drought-tolerant and do not like to be overwatered.

 

Marigolds are warm-season plants that can be planted after the danger of frost has passed. They grow best in warm temperatures and will continue to bloom until the first frost in fall.

Marigolds do not require a lot of fertilizer. Over-fertilizing can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers. If needed, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time or use a half-strength liquid fertilizer occasionally during the growing season.

 

Deadheading spent blooms encourages more flowers to form and extends the blooming period. Simply pinch off or cut the dead flower heads.
Pinching back young marigold plants can encourage bushier growth and more blooms.
 

Marigolds are relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by aphids and spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to control these pests.

To prevent fungal diseases, ensure good air circulation around the plants and water early in the day so the foliage has time to dry.
